Bedroom Furniture Guide

The main feature in your bedroom is your bed, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important for all your other bedroom furniture to complement it. There are so many options when it comes to choosing the right furniture, so we created the Bed Shop Halifax Guide to Bedroom Furniture to give you a hand.

To match or not to match?

When creating a look and feel of a bedroom, many people question whether it is better to buy a matching set of furniture, or better to branch out individually. A matching set of three certainly provides a cohesive feel throughout the room, creating a calming space where no one piece of furniture is vying for attention over another. They are also the easier and most stress-free option, as you don’t have to worry about finding the perfect piece to match something you already own. Branching out however and picking individual items of furniture can be a great way to showcase your individuality and personality in your room. It allows for greater freedom of style, however, it is key to make sure you have a set style in mind and find pieces to match, otherwise, your bedroom may end up looking too mismatched and chaotic.

Magic wardrobes

Your wardrobe will likely be the most eye-catching item in the room aside from your bed due to its size. That is why choosing the right one is vital. Most wardrobes come in a range of styles and configurations, so it is important to know what you require before looking for one. Consider which clothes need hanging and which need folding, and which you have more of. There is little use for a wardrobe where the majority is hanging space if your clothing consists of chunky knits.

Chest of drawers

A chest of drawers is a purely functional item of furniture in your room, but that doesn’t mean it has to look dull. It is the perfect place to fold those items of clothing that don’t need hanging (meaning you may be able to choose a smaller wardrobe as well), but serves as a tabletop as well – ideal for beauty products, candles, and photo frames. The large style of a chest of drawers makes them great to hold your bedroom TV.

Standard chest of drawers vary in height, but generally size from 80cm to 150cm, with an average depth of 50cm. They come in a range of configurations of drawers, with deeper and large drawers usually at the bottom, and smaller drawers closer to the top, making efficient organisation easy to achieve.

Handsome tallboys

Tallboys are a taller and thinner variation of a chest of drawers, ideal for narrow rooms without the space for a wide set of drawers. They provide similar storage options but take up much less floor space, and provide less countertop space to use.

The bedside table

Your bedside tables are a staple of your bedroom. Sitting aside a bed, your nightstand does exactly what it says on the tin. Most bedside tables sit between 50cm, and 70cm in height – the perfect height to keep all your essentials for a good night’s sleep. The space on top of the bedside table varies depending on the style you choose; however, you can expect to fit a lamp, alarm clock, and maybe a few books on there.

Most bedside tables have a couple of drawers; however, some mimic a coffee table look and are just the table top and legs. A set of bedside tables look great again either side of a bed, but as a couple, you may want to express your personality with mismatched tables.

Nifty dressing tables

Another staple in a bedroom is the dressing table. Historically considered a feminine item of furniture, the dressing table is now a great idea in both men’s and women’s bedrooms, offering that extra storage plus a dedicated space to get ready in the mornings. Your dressing table is as much a feature as other items of furniture, so it’s important to consider how it will look in the room. Consider whether drawers are your priority, or whether you prefer a sleek and modern look with only small drawers.

Dressing tables often come with matching chairs, so make sure you check the space you have available for the dressing table. Most dressing tables average at 70-80cm in height and 40cm in depth, with stools and chairs usually being small enough to slot in the gap in the middle.

Imperial ottomans

An ottoman serves both as additional storage and additional seating in your bedroom. A small addition, an ottoman can make a big change to your room. Often placed at the end of your bed, an ottoman is great for storing bulky items like thick blankets, or seasonal clothing you don’t need regular access to. Most ottomans measure slightly smaller than a bed or sofa, as they can also be used as a footstool. The average height of an ottoman is usually 40-55cm, meaning it takes up little space and is fairly unobtrusive, ideal for smaller rooms.
