Mattress Care Guide

Sleep is one of the most important things you can get, and you deserve to sleep in a comfy bed. No one wants an uncomfortable, lumpy mattress, so ensuring optimum mattress care is very important. We have numerous tips for taking care of your mattress, so that you can get years of ZZZ’s out of your mattress.

What should I do when I receive my new mattress?

When you first receive your new mattress, remove your mattress from its protective packaging and lay it down flat. Give your mattress time to air out by leaving it uncovered and in a well-ventilated room for a short while. In doing so, you will allow time for the mattress to settle in and dispel any smells that are part and parcel of a brand-new mattress.

Some areas of the mattress filling will settle at a quicker rate than other areas, so it is important to allow enough time for this to happen. Leave at least 24 hours before using your new mattress for it to expand properly. By doing so, you'll be sure to get the best night sleep you've had in years.

Should I use a mattress protector?

It can be surprising the dirt that can build up on a mattress, even when using a fitted mattress sheet. Bae Beds recommend using a mattress protector at all times, providing that extra layer of protection and hygiene. Not only does a mattress protector prevent a build-up of skin cells and dust, it also prevents extensive staining on the mattress, so that spilled cup of hot chocolate won’t leave a permanent mark. Most mattress protectors are machine washable, so maintaining a higher standard of cleanliness and hygiene is easy.

How to clean and care for a mattress?

Rotate and turn your mattress

Your mattress should be turned and/or rotated every few months. Doing so resettles the fillings and maintains an even pressure throughout the mattress, reducing the risk of body impressions or irregular filling, thereby making your mattress last longer.

Whether you rotate or turn your mattress will depend on the mattress you have. In most cases, such as pocket sprung mattresses, turning and rotating is the best course of action. Memory foam mattresses, and those with specifically designed toppings, only need to be rotated so the head and feet end are switched regularly. Some mattresses have specific guidelines for their rotation, such as combination mattresses with a unique dual season feature. The Pocket Sprung Memory Foam mattress can be turned according to season; use the pocket sprung side in summer as it remains cool, and the memory foam topper in winter to offer more warmth.

Clean your Mattress

Despite using a mattress protector, your mattress can still collect unwanted build-up. Giving your mattress a good clean is always beneficial. Firstly, start by vacuuming your mattress, using circular motions. Using a vacuum initially helps to lift any dead skin, hair, dirt, or dust. If necessary, you can also use lukewarm soapy water to gently dab (not rub) your mattress, as this helps lift any stains, such as sweat stains. Cleaning your mattress regularly prevents any unclean and unhygienic build-up, enabling you to maintain a healthier mattress for longer.

Treat with care

Your mattress is vital to a good night’s sleep, and should be kept with the same consideration of care as any other expensive item of furniture in your home. For children especially, a new mattress means a new toy for the day. However, it is important that your mattress is not subjected to the same treatment as tour trampoline Excessive jumping can lead to damage, such as broken springs. Consider also that sitting on the edge of the mattress can, over time, lead to a misshapen and bent mattress.

Clean bedding

Regularly washing your bedding is one quick way to make sure your mattress stays clean and smells fresh all year round. You should wash your bedding every 1-2 weeks with hot soapy water. When getting out of bed, you should also pull the covers back and let your mattress breathe. This helps to reduce any less than pleasant smells within your sheets, and allows time for your mattress to cool down and resettle.

When should I replace my mattress?

Although the majority of mattresses have the ability to last for a couple of decades, we recommend that you replace your mattress every 8 years. If you're wondering whether you need a new mattress or not, here are a few indicators:

  • The exterior of the mattress is worn and torn

  • There are visible lumps and bumps, or you can feel lumps when laying down

  • Your sleep becomes restless and/or disrupted, as a result of being uncomfortable on the mattress

  • The mattress is making your body feel tired and achy
